Product whitepaper · Public document · June 2026

Executive summary

When an organization moves its data warehouse from one engine to another, the visualization layer does not migrate with it. We have seen it happen again and again in SQL Server to Oracle migrations: dozens of Business Intelligence dashboards with custom SQL stop working, and someone has to fix them one by one. The work is slow, repetitive, and easy to get wrong without anyone noticing — until a report shows the wrong numbers.

PBS Business Intelligence Migrator Suite is our answer to that problem. It is an accelerator within the AIAL layer (Artificial Intelligence Acceleration Layer), developed by PBS Studio and delivered through PBS Advanced Services that converts the embedded SQL, repoints the connections and validates data equivalence for an entire batch of dashboards in a single process. It is not a catalog product: it was born solving a real problem on an analytics-platform migration project and matured in use.

It reflects how PBS Studio works: AI accelerates, engineering guarantees. It was researched, designed and built with AI-assisted engineering, which compressed its development cycle; but the engine that runs over the client's data is deliberately deterministic, so that every conversion is reproducible, auditable and free of the risk of fabricated results on critical figures. Behind it stands the backing of PBS Group, present in 24 countries across the region.

AI accelerates, engineering guarantees: we use AI to build the tool; its execution is a deterministic engine that sends no client data to third parties.

This document describes the problem, the tool's capabilities, its engineering approach and its governance model. It closes with an invitation to a technical session where we can demonstrate the migration on a real set of dashboards.

The challenge: migrating the data without breaking the analytics

A data warehouse migration is rarely just a database migration. Around the warehouse lives an ecosystem of reports, dashboards and extracts that assume a specific SQL dialect, data types and connection style tied to the source engine. When that engine changes — for example, from SQL Server to Oracle — everything that contains hand-written SQL stops working.

In Business Intelligence, dashboards with custom SQL are precisely the most valuable and the most fragile: they encapsulate business logic an analyst built with care. Migrating them by hand forces a team to open and fix each workbook individually, translating function by function between two dialects that look alike enough to be confusing. The risk is not only time: a subtly incorrect conversion produces a report that runs without error but returns the wrong numbers — the worst-case scenario in business intelligence.

Two insufficient answers exist for this challenge. A 100% manual migration is precise but does not scale and consumes the scarcest talent. A conversion based 100% on generative AI scales but introduces unpredictability over the figures and lacks traceability. At PBS we take a third path: AI acceleration in the construction of the tool, and a deterministic, verifiable engine in its execution.

PBS Advanced Services, PBS Studio and the AIAL layer

PBS Group — Productive Business Solutions, part of Grupo Musson — is a regional technology integrator present in 24 countries, with in-house software and artificial intelligence engineering capability. Within its offering, PBS Advanced Services brings together the advanced engineering services — migration, modernization, data and analytics — enabled by an AI acceleration layer. This is what the client contracts: solutions with outcomes, not boxed software.

PBS Studio is the innovation and research-and-development area where the company's artificial intelligence products are born; an in-house team that designs, prototypes and matures accelerators under the PBS/Grupo Musson AI Governance Framework. Its first portfolio result is AIAL — Artificial Intelligence Acceleration Layer: a unified layer of accelerators that mounts on top of the client's data projects. PBS Business Intelligence Migrator Suite is the AIAL accelerator dedicated to the continuity of the analytics layer during data warehouse migrations.

PBS Business Intelligence Migrator Suite

What it does

  • Processes entire batches in a single step: it takes a set of workbooks and migrates them in one run, returning a consolidated status report for each (converted, converted with warnings, or failed). It replaces dashboard-by-dashboard manual work with a single operation over the whole batch.
  • Analyzes the workbooks: it automatically detects which dashboards contain custom SQL and which rely solely on metadata.
  • Converts the SQL: it translates the embedded SQL from the SQL Server 2014 dialect to Oracle, preserving the semantic intent of the original query.
  • Repoints the connections: it updates the workbook metadata to point to Oracle, stripping the source-engine attributes that would prevent the migrated file from opening, and normalizes object identifiers.
  • Validates the structure: it runs a battery of structural and syntactic checks without touching data.
  • Verifies with live data: it executes the original and the converted query against both databases and compares columns, row counts and sample values.
  • Flags for human review: it explicitly flags the patterns that cannot be safely converted automatically, instead of translating them silently.

Engineering approach

The tool follows a hybrid architecture of deterministic structural analysis plus an extensible conversion rules engine, with two-level validation and built-in human oversight. The workbook is processed as a structured document: the tool operates surgically only on the regions that contain real business SQL and leaves the format's internal regions intact — a difference that matters, because it avoids corrupting the migrated file.

Two design decisions define the product. The first is AI in the creation, determinism in the execution: the tool was conceived and built with AI-assisted engineering at PBS Studio, but the artifact that runs over the client's data is deterministic — the same input always produces the same output, and every transformation is explainable and auditable. The second is flag-and-warn over convert-in-silence: faced with an ambiguous pattern or one without a direct equivalent, the tool escalates it to the engineer rather than emitting plausible but potentially incorrect SQL.

What it automates and what the PBS team resolves

The tool automates the detection of dashboards with custom SQL within a batch, the translation of the most common SQL pattern families between the two dialects, the rewriting of connections, and the verification of result equivalence between source and target.

The residual work is resolved by the PBS engineering team as part of the service: the patterns flagged as unsupported, the validation of business logic when counts or values differ, the adjustment of queries that depend on objects not yet present in the target schema, and the modeling or performance decisions specific to the new engine. Acknowledging this boundary is deliberate: the tool accelerates and secures the migration, and expert oversight remains part of the process.

Governance and quality

The governance differentiator of this tool is total data sovereignty at runtime. The delivered product operates by connecting directly to the client's databases and local file system, and sends no client data, query or metadata to third-party services or models. Artificial intelligence took part in the creation phase of the tool — research, analysis and development at PBS Studio — not in its operation: the conversion engine that runs over the client's data is deterministic, so there is no way for data to leak during the migration.

Quality rests on the PBS/Musson Group AI Governance Framework, consistent with the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, the ISO/IEC 42001:2023 standard and the EU AI Act. Each converted block keeps its original, its result and its warnings, so every transformation can be traced. Validation runs at two levels: a structural check without data, and a comparison of results against both engines. And when a pattern is uncertain, the tool escalates it to the engineer instead of resolving it on its own.

Application case

A regional organization decided to consolidate its data platform by migrating its data warehouse from SQL Server to Oracle. Its analytics layer included a set of Business Intelligence dashboards with custom SQL queries that, after the backend migration, stopped working. Instead of rewriting each query by hand — with the risk of introducing silent differences in the figures — the team processed the entire batch with PBS Business Intelligence Migrator: the tool converted the SQL, repointed the connections and, for each dashboard, executed the original and the converted query against both databases to confirm that the results matched. The few cases flagged as unsupported were resolved manually with the support of the traceability report, cutting a task of weeks down to a fraction of the effort and with evidence of data equivalence.

Working with PBS Advanced Services

We offer this capability as a continuum within PBS Advanced Services, not as boxed software. First, as an AIAL accelerator applied within our migration and modernization services. Second, as a starting point for custom AI tools: the same methodology and governance framework with which PBS Studio built this accelerator can build the one your specific problem requires. And third, as a multiplier of the speed and quality of our data engineering and consulting services. In every case, the client does not buy a binary: they buy a verified migration outcome.
